GenConnect: Features

User-Defined Storage Infrastructure
Anyone’s storage infrastructure can be virtually represented with GenConnect’s Storage Explorer module.  Freezer, liquid nitrogen tanks and even cabinets can be subdivided to nearly infinite levels.  Sample carriers such as boxes are user-defined as well for maximum flexibility.  Any box configuration can be modeled and all standard plate configurations are pre-loaded.

Batch Processing
GenConnect also has the ability to add and remove samples and their data in batches for higher throughput applications.  Data can also be imported as flat files from liquid handlers or other databases to facilitate data transfer.

System Architecture:
GenConnect has a client/server architecture.  The server application utilizes an open-source relational database, PostgreSQL.  For users with more demanding support and usage requirements, GenConnect is available with an Oracle 10g database.  The client application is a rich GUI built on Java.  Communications between the server and client are delivered as XML with a SOAP interface.  These secure web services provide a strong layer of security in data transfer and enables the software to be deployed across multiple sites in many physical locations.

System Security and Traceability:
GenConnect provides three levels of user based security.  Each user is assigned a unique username and password and that username is associated in our log files with every user action that is committed to the database.  Further every user is assigned a role and can only access functionality appropriate to that user’s role.  Finally, each user must be granted access to a particular project.  User’s without project access will not be able to view information related to that project.
